Oggi volevo dire due cose su Isaak Babel<\/strong>. \u00c8 un autore russo molto famoso, magari non quanto Tolstoj o Dostoevskij o Gogol per le masse, ma \u00e8 molto famoso. Non mi interessa per\u00f2 come “autore russo” o per le sue opere in generale, ma come autore che ha fatto delle affermazioni precise sulla scrittura per la narrativa.<\/p>\n

Isaak Emmanuilovich Babel<\/strong>
\n(Odessa, 13 luglio 1894 \u2013 Mosca, 27 gennaio 1940)<\/em>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Isaak Babel era un ebreo nella Russia antisemita<\/strong>. La famiglia scamp\u00f2 per un pelo al pogrom del 1905, protetta da una famiglia cristiana, e Isaak riusc\u00ec a studiare e a diventare giornalista nonostante gli stretti vincoli posti all’ammissione scolastica degli ebrei.<\/p>\n

Da giovane adorava Gustave Flaubert e Guy de Maupassant<\/strong> e per un anno lesse solo Lev Tolstoj<\/strong>, arrivando a dire che grazie a lui “aveva compreso le sublimi virt\u00f9 della gente russa”. Detta da un ebreo che vive in mezzo a dei russi che ammazzavano i giudei non appena capitava l’occasione (non erano ben integrati come in Germania) e il resto del tempo li tenevano in un regime stile apartheid, \u00e8 una frase che fa riflettere sul potere della letteratura: rende scemi. ^_^<\/p>\n

Isaak combatt\u00e9 per anni al fianco dei rivoluzionari bolscevichi, fece il traduttore per il controspionaggio e partecip\u00f2 alla Guerra Polacco-Bolscevica del 1919-1921<\/a> al fianco dei feroci cosacchi della Prima Armata a Cavallo<\/strong> del generale Bud\u00ebnnyj.<\/a> E i cosacchi, Isaak lo sapeva bene, erano i pi\u00f9 feroci antisemiti in un mondo di antisemiti.<\/p>\n

All’esperienza della guerra in Polonia dedic\u00f2 i racconti pubblicati nel 1924 e poi raccolti nel libro “L’Armata a Cavallo” del 1926<\/strong>. Racconti crudi, in cui la violenza contro gli ebrei dei territori invasi non ha colore politico: bianchi e rossi infieriscono allo stesso modo. Ma era il mondo della Russia comunista prima di Stalin, quando la Pravda poteva ancora definire “astro nascente della nostra letteratura” un autore cos\u00ec brutale nel rappresentare la realt\u00e0 della Rivoluzione (ma anche all’epoca gli autori che avevano una visione pi\u00f9 romantica lo osteggiarono).\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Isaak Babel<\/strong> aveva un problema (a parte l’essere ebreo, russo e comunista): era uno di quei coglioni delle “regolette sulla scrittura”<\/a>. E da alcune cose che diceva, sembra anche uno dei coglioni peggiori: peggiore di Orson Scott Card, peggiore di Flaubert, forse perfino peggiore di Strunk & White, l’anticristo degli Artisti che odiano le “regolette” e il suo allievo prediletto. Il peggiore dei peggiori. Vogliamo leggere un suo parere?<\/em><\/p>\n

[…] before I take out all the rubbish, I break the text into shorter sentences. The more full stops the better<\/strong>. I’d like to have that passed into law. Not more than one idea and one image in one sentence. Never be afraid of full stops. […]
\nI take out all the participles and adverbs I can. Participles are heavy, angular, they destroy the rhythm<\/strong>. They grate like tanks going over rubble. Three participles to one sentence and you kill the language. All that “resenting,” “obtaining,” “concentrating,” and so on. Adverbs are lighter<\/strong>. They can even lend you wings in a way. But too many make the language spineless<\/strong>. […]
\nA noun needs only one adjective, the choicest. Only a genius can afford two adjectives to one noun<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Frasi brevi. Evitare i participi. Limitarsi a un solo aggettivo per volta, il migliore. Non \u00e8 proprio vero che bisogna essere dei geni per riuscire a metterne due, ma di certo \u00e8 rischioso gestire pi\u00f9 di un solo aggettivo per volta e precipitare nel ridicolo al terzo aggettivo \u00e8 praticamente assicurato. Quattro aggettivi sono un pericolo anche per Joyce. Si pu\u00f2 scrivere meglio evitando di fare gare di aggettivazione estrema e concentrandosi di pi\u00f9 su nomi e verbi, no? Come diceva Le Carr\u00e9<\/strong>: “Lasciate che i verbi facciano il lavoro”.<\/p>\n

A proposito di James Joyce, che potremmo usare come “genio” capace di gestire pi\u00f9 di un aggettivo per volta senza scadere nel ridicolo, Oakley Hall suggerisce questo brano:<\/p>\n

The high cold empty gloomy<\/em> rooms liberated me and I went from room to room singing. From the front window I saw my companions playing below in the street. Their cries reached me weakened and indistinct<\/em> and, leaning my forehead against the cool glass, I looked over at the dark house where she lived.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Non mi piace molto come scrive, ma non mi sento offeso e preso per il culo da quel “high cold empty gloomy”. Ha una sua musicalit\u00e0, un suo ritmo, una sua forza difficile da spiegare. Non mi fa impazzire, per cui lo sforzo titanico di mettere quattro aggettivi di seguito non riesco a percepirlo come “ripagato”, ma non prenderei a calci nei denti Joyce per questo (per altro forse s\u00ec, ma io non sono il suo pubblico ideale).<\/p>\n

Nel libro di Oakley Hall potete trovare un altro esempio, tratto da “Il generale nel suo labirinto” di M\u00e1rquez, in cui vengono indicati vari aggettivi che \u00e8 bene tenere perch\u00e9 necessari al testo. Gli aggettivi e gli avverbi di modo non vanno tolti tutti, ma solo quelli superflui<\/strong>: nel caso degli aggettivi saranno gran parte e nel caso degli avverbi di modo saranno quasi tutti.
\nVengono tolti perch\u00e9 superflui (\u201cci\u00f2 che non aggiunge qualit\u00e0 al testo la sottrae”) e non “perch\u00e9 s\u00ec perch\u00e9 \u00e8 fantasy”, come invece vorrebbero far credere gli ignoranti che disdegnano i manuali di scrittura per partito preso oppure i gegni<\/em> che lo fanno per incapacit\u00e0 di comprensione e apprendimento (la volpe e l’uva della narrativa: non capisco una mazza di come si fa a scrivere quindi i manuali fanno schifo e li odio… LOL!).<\/p>\n

Curioso che Isaak Babel fosse pi\u00f9 avvelenato nei confronti degli aggettivi che degli avverbi di modo<\/strong>. Forse gli avverbi di modo in russo non hanno lo stesso suono disgustoso che hanno in spagnolo e in italiano (e in tono minore in inglese). Benissimo non dovevano suonare, visto che comunque li sconsiglia, ma qui dovrebbe intervenire qualche esperto di narrativa che conosce bene il russo per togliere i dubbi.<\/p>\n

Un comunista ebreo russo<\/em> della prima met\u00e0 del Novecento pu\u00f2 dare suggerimenti sulla narrativa poco diversi da quelli di un capitalista americano di oltre mezzo secolo dopo o di un professore di inglese suo contemporaneo o di un grande letterato francese di met\u00e0 Ottocento: le buone idee non badano all’anno, alla razza e alla nazione.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Per farvi un’idea del suo stile riporto la traduzione in inglese distribuita da SovLit.com<\/strong> del racconto “La Morte di Dolgushov”<\/strong> tratto da “L’Armata a Cavallo”.
\nHo evitato le due traduzioni in italiano che avevo letto perch\u00e9, a parte eventuali problemi di copyright, le ho reputate inadeguate: quella di Renato Poggioli sembrava una cattiva traduzione dall’inglese (con tanto di He<\/em> che regolarmente diventa Egli<\/em> invece di essere omesso) e quella di Costantino Di Paola, questa forse davvero dal russo, non mi convinceva rispetto alla versione in inglese.
\nNon so quale versione sia pi\u00f9 fedele all’originale russo, ma quella in inglese mi suona meglio anche se l’abbondanza di avverbi in “-ly” mi fa sospettare che pure questa traduzione sia di bassa qualit\u00e0 (e la seconda frase mi pare una schifezza illeggibile in tutte le versioni).<\/p>\n

And he galloped off, fluttering, all black, with eyes like coal.<\/p>\n

On the plain, flat as a board, the brigades were repositioning themselves. The sun was rolling along in the crimson dust. The wounded, in ditches, were snacking. Nurses were lying on the grass and singing quietly. Afonka’s scouts were roaming the field, searching out the dead and uniforms. Afonka passed by within two feet of me. Without turning his head he said:<\/p>\n

“They smacked us right in the face. Ain’t no doubt about it. They’re thinking of changing the divisional commander. The soldiers don’t trust him.”<\/p>\n

The Poles came up to the forest three versts from us and set up their machine guns nearby. Bullets whine and scream. Their lament grows unendurably. Bullets wound the earth and dig into it, trembling with impatience. Vytyagaichenko, commander of the regiment, snoring in the sunshine, cried out in his sleep and woke up. He got on his horse and rode off to the lead squadron. His face was crumpled, in red streaks after his uncomfortable sleep, and his pockets were full of plums.<\/p>\n

“Son of a bitch,” he said angrily and spit a seed out of his mouth. “What a hell of a mess. Timoshka, pull out the flag!”<\/p>\n

“Shall we get going?” asked Timoshenko, taking the staff out of the stirrup and unfurling the banner, which had a star on it and some wording about the Third International.<\/p>\n

“We’ll see what’s up there,” Vytyagaichenko said. Then he suddenly let out a wild yell: “Girls, to your horses! Squadron commanders, get your men together!”<\/p>\n

The buglers sounded the alarm. The squadrons lined up in a column. A wounded soldier crawled up out of a ditch and, covering his face with the palm of his hand, said to Vytyagaichenko, “Taras Grigorevich, I’m a delegate. It looks like we’re going to be left behind.”<\/p>\n

“Defend yourselves,” Vytyagaichenko mumbled and reared his horse up on its hind legs.<\/p>\n

“We kind of have the idea, Taras Grigorevich, that we won’t be able to defend ourselves,” the wounded man called after him.<\/p>\n

“Don’t whine,” Vytyagaichenko retorted. “It’s not like I’m gonna abandon you.” And he gave the order to get ready.<\/p>\n

Just then, the whining, womanish voice of my friend Afonka Bida rang out. “Don’t go racing off, Taras Grigorevich. We’ve got six versts to cover. How you gonna fight if the horses are worn out? We’ll make it in plenty of time.”<\/p>\n

“At a walk!”, commanded Vytaygaichenko, not raising his eyes.<\/p>\n

The regiment set off.<\/p>\n

“If I’m right about the Divisional Commander,” whispered Afonka, holding back, “if they replace him, things will start moving. Period.”<\/p>\n

Tears flowed from his eyes. I stopped by Afonka in amazement. He spun around like a top, grabbed his cap, started to wheeze, let out a whoop, and galloped off.<\/p>\n

Grishchuk with his idiotic tachanka cart and I stayed behind until evening, wandering around between the walls of fire. Divisional headquarters had disappeared. Other units wouldn’t take us in. The regiments entered Brody, and were beaten back by a counterattack. We went up to the city cemetery. A Polish scout jumped up from behind a grave and, shouldering his rifle, began to shoot at us. Grishchuk turned around. His tachanka squealed with all four wheels.<\/p>\n

“Grishchuk!”, I shouted through the whistling and the wind.<\/p>\n

“What nonsense,” he answered sadly.<\/p>\n

“It’s the end of us,” I exclaimed, seized by a fatal panic. “It’s the end of us!”<\/p>\n

“Why do women go through all the trouble?’ he answered even sadder. “Why all the proposals and marriages, and having fun at the weddings?”<\/p>\n

A pink tail shined in the sky, then faded away. The Milky Way emerged through the stars.<\/p>\n

“It makes me laugh,” said Grishchuk sorrowfully and pointed his whip at a man sitting on the side of the road. “It makes me laugh that women go to all that trouble.”<\/p>\n

The man sitting on the road was Dolgushov, the telephone operator. Spreading out his legs, he stared at us.<\/p>\n

“I’m done for, you see?” said Dolgushov as we approached. “We see”, answered Grishchuk, stopping the horses.<\/p>\n

“You’ll have to waste a cartridge on me,” said Dolgushov.<\/p>\n

He sat leaning against a tree. His boots were sticking out in different directions. Without lowering his eyes from my gaze, he carefully pulled back his shirt. His stomach had been ripped open, his intestines were hanging on his knees, and you could see the beating of his heart.<\/p>\n

“The Poles’ll show up and have their fun. Here are my documents. Write my mother and tell her what happened.”<\/p>\n

“No,” I answered and spurred on my horse.<\/p>\n

Dolgushov laided his blue palms on the ground and looked at them distrustfully.<\/p>\n

“You’re running away?” he muttered, sliding down. “You’re running, you louse.”<\/p>\n

Sweat crawled down along my body. Machine guns tapped out faster and faster with hysterical insistence. Framed in the nimbus of the sunset, Afonka Bida galloped up to us.<\/p>\n

“We’re really giving it to them,” he shouted out happily. \u201cWhat’s all the hub-bub here?”<\/p>\n

I pointed out Dolgushov to him and rode away.<\/p>\n

They spoke briefly. I didn’t hear their words. Dolgushov held his papers out to the platoon commander. Afonka hid the papers in his boot and shot Dolgushov in the mouth.<\/p>\n

“Afonka,” I said, riding up to the Cossack with a pitiful smile, “I just couldn’t”.<\/p>\n

“Go away,” he said, growing pale. “I’ll kill you. You guys in glasses have as much pity for our boys as a cat does for a mouse.” And he cocked his rifle.<\/p>\n

I rode away at a walk, not turning around, feeling cold and death at my back.<\/p>\n

“Bona,” Grishchuk shouted out behind me, “stop fooling around.” And he grabbed Afonka by the arm.<\/p>\n

“The goddamn lackey,” shouted Afonka, “He’s not gonna get off that easy.”<\/p>\n

Grishchuk caught up with me at the turn in the road. Afonka wasn’t there. He had ridden off in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n

“You see, Grishchuk,” I said, “today I lost my Afonka, my best friend.”<\/p>\n

Grishchuk pulled a shriveled apple out from underneath his seat.<\/p>\n

“Eat,” he told me. “Please, eat.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Sar\u00e0 il caso di imitarlo?<\/strong> Prima studiate e trovate qualcosa per cui valga la pena scrivere (nel suo caso la guerra, su cui si era ben informato di persona) e solo dopo riprendete a scrivere. Magari evitando di scrivere per settimane la storia di due cinesi in un bordello (1919) o scopiazzare racconti dalle memorie di un ufficiale francese (1920): o farlo giusto come esercizio di scrittura mentre si trova il “proprio stile”, senza pensare subito di poter iniziare con la “grande opera di una vita”. Ma forse l’italiano medio<\/strong> si sente migliore di Isaak Babel, un miserabile ebreo comunista<\/em>, vero? ^_^<\/p>\n

Lieto fine per quelli che odiano le “regolette” (e gli ebrei)<\/strong>: nel 1940 Stalin fece fucilare Babel senza alcun motivo ragionevole a parte un “perch\u00e9 s\u00ec, perch\u00e9 sono le purghe”.
