Come ho annunciato qui<\/a> il 16 dicembre, ecco oggi l’articolo per pubblicizzare il libro Boneshaker<\/em> di Cherie Priest. Mi ero accorto dell’uscita su gigapedia del file scaricabile gi\u00e0 la mattina del 17 dicembre, ma ho preferito aspettare qualche ora prima di pubblicare questo articolo, gi\u00e0 pronto da due giorni, per concedere l’onore della prima segnalazione<\/a> all’adorata Gamberetta.<\/p>\n

Ci dovrebbero essere<\/em> quattro buoni motivi per consigliare Boneshaker<\/em>:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00e8 Steampunk in un Ottocento alternativo, con tecnologie pi\u00f9 avanzate;<\/li>\n
  2. \u00e8 Steampunk chiassoso, avventuroso e pieno di bizzarrie (o cos\u00ec lo spacciano);<\/li>\n
  3. l’autrice \u00e8 una che AMA<\/em> lo Steampunk e non una che spera solo di farci soldi;<\/li>\n
  4. quattro.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    But on its first test run the Boneshaker went terribly awry, destroying several blocks of downtown Seattle and unearthing a subterranean vein of blight gas that turned anyone who breathed it into the living dead.<\/p>\n

    Cherie Priest’s zombie steampunk mad-science dungeon crawl family adventure novel Boneshaker is everything you’d want in such a volume and much more. <\/em>

    \nIt’s full of buckle and has swash to spare, and the characters are likable and the prose is fun. This is a hoot from start to finish, pure mad adventure.<\/em>

    Il romanzo in pochissimo tempo \u00e8 finito tra i migliori libri del 2009 di Publishers Weekly<\/a>, quinto posto su cinque nella lista “Science Fiction\/Fantasy\/Horror”, fianco a fianco con un pezzo grosso come China Mi\u00e9ville.
    \nE a quanto diceva l’autrice le vendite stanno andando molto bene.<\/p>\n

    Ancora prima di cominciare la lettura c’\u00e8 una cosa che mi ha fatto apprezzare ancora di pi\u00f9 l’autrice (a parte che veste Steampunk e si tinge i capelli di strani colori): \u00e8 una che pare prendere lo Steampunk ottocentesco seriamente<\/strong>.
    \nUna che scrive di bizzarrie e cose strambe non perch\u00e9 non sa nulla del passato (non che sia un genio, eh…), ma per usare il passato come piattaforma per il fantastico. Molto diversa dai tanti (aspiranti o editi) scrittori fantasy che parlano di generici medioevi di cartapesta<\/em> perch\u00e9 non sanno nulla del medioevo reale (il fantasy come giustificazione dell’ignoranza e non come trampolino per l’immaginazione: che schifo!).

    As some of you local buffs are aware, I\u2019ve also ignored a couple of major turning points in Seattle\u2019s development: the 1889 fire that destroyed most of the city and the 1897 Denny Hill regrade. Since both of these events took place well after the events of this book (which transpired in 1880), I had a fair bit of leeway when making up my version of Pioneer Square and its surrounding blocks.<\/p>\n

    For reference\u2019s sake, I used a Sanborn survey map from 1884 to make sure that I loosely, generally followed the likely lay of the land, but heaven knows I went off the rails a bit here and there.<\/p>\n

    Ergo.<\/p>\n

    Assuming a much earlier, much bigger population base, it is not altogether outside the realm of reason that some of Seattle\u2019s landmark buildings might\u2019ve been under way in the 1860s, before the wall went up.<\/p>\n

    That\u2019s my logic and I\u2019m sticking to it.<\/p>\n

    So there\u2019s no need to send me helpful e-mails explaining that King Street Station wasn\u2019t started until 1904, that the Smith Tower wasn\u2019t begun until 1909, or that Commercial Street is really First Avenue. I know the facts, and every digression from them was deliberate.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    Il problema per\u00f2 \u00e8 che, pur informandosi (quanti autori di fantasy italiano hanno la mentalit\u00e0 per informarsi anche solo sulla mappa storica di una citt\u00e0?), decide di fare poi un po’ troppo come le pare dal punto di vista della credibilit\u00e0\/realismo a quanto capisco leggendo subito dopo questo:<\/p>\n

    At any rate, thank you for reading, and thank you for suspending your disbelief for a few hundred pages. I realize that the story is a bit of a twisted stretch<\/strong>, but honestly\u2014isn\u2019t that what steampunk is for?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    Ok, lo Steampunk sono ANCHE le puttanate, ma se c’\u00e8 una solida base tecnologica “credibile” \u00e8 molto meglio, come per tutta la fantascienza o lo science-fantasy (a cui lo steampunk un po’ appartiene) che si rispetti. Puttanate, ma non SOLO puttanate. Speriamo bene e incrociamo le dita…<\/p>\n

    Potete trovare Boneshaker<\/em> su gigapedia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    E ora qualche elemento che mi ha fatto subito pensare al videogioco Damnation<\/a><\/em>.
    \nEntrambi sono ambientati in una America in cui la Guerra Civile si \u00e8 trascinata molto pi\u00f9 a lungo che nel nostro mondo. In Damnation<\/em> ci sono le PSI, industrie d’armi che si sono arricchite vendendo a entrambi gli schieramenti, guidate un pazzo che vuole dominare la “nuova America”… \u00e8 una cosa cos\u00ec ritardata che sembra pari-pari presa da     G.I. Joe<\/a>: il parallelo con M.A.R.S. e COBRA mi sembra calzante.
    \nSpero che in Boneshaker<\/em> simili stronzate ci vengano risparmiate. ^_^”
    \nIn Boneshaker<\/em> la piaga degli zombie \u00e8 dovuta a a un gas rilasciato nell’ambiente. In Damnation<\/em> gli zombie sono soldati e operai delle PSI, imbottiti di un siero schiavizzante che un po’ per volta li riduce a zombie affamati di carne umana. E, se ricordo bene, in una parte del gioco dicono che il siero viene rilasciato nell’acqua per zombificare la popolazione. Zombificazione tramite avvelenamento in entrambi in casi.
    \nEntrambi sono Weird West<\/strong>, termine sotto cui si colloca anche lo Steampunk (con o senza Horror) nel selvaggio west, come nel gioco di ruolo     Deadlands<\/a> o nel film Wild Wild West<\/a>.
    \nEntrambi contengono dirigibili e pirati dell’aria (il gruppo di eroi\/terroristi anti-PSI di Damnation<\/em> con la nave volante ha molto dei “corsari dell’aria”).<\/p>\n

    I vecchi e i malati trascorrono i loro ultimi giorni nelle fabbriche di carne in scatola. Le persone sono importanti per le PSI: niente e nessuno viene sprecato.<\/em>
    \n(dai megafoni della propaganda PSI nel gioco, LOL!)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    Tornando al titolo di Boneshaker<\/em>: ora lo troverete meno figo<\/a>. ^__^<\/p>\n

    \nRisposta:<\/strong> Non lo so. Probabilmente no: non \u00e8 un libro che merita la fatica di farla. Forse ne parler\u00f2, per sottolineare che ha deluso del tutto le aspettative e che ha ricevuto molte pi\u00f9 attenzioni di quante ne meritasse, grazie a critici compiacenti e amiketti in cerca di bustarelle\/affetto (Doctorow).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
